Smart Car wins Cannonball

This is unreal. The Cannonball Run, made famous by a movie featuring Burt Reynolds in the 70’s, is held every year in either Europe or North America. Anyone can enter, as long as you pay the fee and your car is road worthy. The goal, get from point A to point B before anyone else does. The journey is 3000 miles long.

This year, a Smart Car won. Yes, I said a Smart Car. It’s got the Brabus body kit on it, so it appears to be beefier, but it’s not modified. The event, which started at Sandown Park (UK) and took in France, Portugal and Spain with a finish in Brighton, saw the duo awarded first place for completing the route at the exact stipulated requirement of an average of 61mph.

It was the smart’s impressive fuel economy that really provided the edge for the 46-year-olds and their Union Jack-liveried smart. The performance version of the iconic smart range, which features a 700cc, 74hp, three-cylinder turbo engine, is capable of 53.3 miles per gallon when driven on the combined fuel cycle – a factor that enabled the car to spend less time at the gas pumps than its thirstier rivals.

“The downfall of the bigger cars (Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s, Veyrons and Porsches) was that they were forced to stop so often, so while they kept overtaking us, we eventually went past them at the next petrol station when they needed to fill up again. We kept at a decent speed and still averaged around 35 miles per gallon.”

They are entering the car in next year’s run, from Los Angeles to Miami. I’m willing to bet more than one Smart Car will be entered.

Here’s a question you’ve never asked yourself.

How many people can fit in a Smart Two?

I myself have never really given two shits, but apparently some people thought it’d be fun to put on velvety like spandex and squeeze themselves into this little car. Not sure why, but it’s always fun to watch pudgy people in spandex so I’m in. Ever notice overweight people usually drive *really* small cars? Do they spend all their money on food? er.. I digress… back to topic.

So how many people can fit into one of these cars? 13. 13 very, very uncomfortable people. Ok, now that we’ve solved this, let’s get on with cancer, aids, starvation, how bush got re-elected the second time. mk? mk.

Pimp your Smart Two

My girlfriend loves these cars. We call them ‘BB Cars” (BB for baby) because of course, they’re so crazy ass small. I saw this and thought of her so I figured I’d share.

Austrian tuner Koenigseder decided to mod the hell out of a Smart Fortwo. They call this version the Smart 451.
