All blondes are not dumb, we both know this.  Dumb comes in all colours. heh I know just as many brunette retards as I do blondes. :)

Keyboard for Blondes…

keyboard_for_blondes_pic

This is actually not a joke, they’re selling this for $49.95 which for a simple keyboard… ummm.. yeah, you’d have to be blonde to pay fifty bones for this.

blondes keyboard

It is funny and if it was $20 or something, I’d prob grab one and send it to an ex of mine that thought she was smart. Girl had a double degree, she was/is a teacher yet she couldn’t spell simple words at the best of times. We all make typos, we all have mind farts but I figure if you’re a dual degree teacher..  the one in charge of shaping future great minds… well, I’d like it if you knew how to fucking spell. That’s just me though. I’m picky like that.

note to girlfriend if reading this: I’d never buy an ex a gift

Here’s a dorky little video to explain/show how I can be playing around in Vista 64 bit while I’m still in Mac OS-X 10.5.5

Best of both worlds, both systems have positive points so rather then become a fanboy either way, I chose both.

This is a geek post, if you’re not a geek, most or some of this will be boring shit for you. Sorry.

So the day has finally arrived. I finally got my hands on Vista 64 bit as well as another hard drive so Vista could have it’s own hard drive, as to not interfere with anything OS-X wise.

I grabbed my third Seagate 7200.11 drive today, so I have three one terabyte drives + the standard 320 gig drive in this beast. Hello overkill, how are you?

So anyway, here’s what I am doing… I am using my Mac Pro and I love OS-X but thing is, there are some windows programs I can’t really live without. One of which is LiveWriter. I had previously tried VMware and Parallels in OS-X, running XP Pro, and then a second time trying Vista 64 bit (yes, uninstalling XP before putting in Vista, I know to remove, reboot before adding new shit, heh)

Anyway, I was able to get LiveWriter to work, but… not with drag/drop which is of course essential to LiveWriter. Even the add image command didn’t work, reason being.. Macs and Windows do their filing systems differently. Macs are all UNIX based with Volumes etc where as Windows is C:/ etc sort of shit. So… the Windows program, while inside an emulator was basically hitting a wall. Windows looks for C:/ path to livewriter or image I am dragging and being within OS-X, it’s actually/volume/ etc so with the paths not matching, of course an error would be created and well, it was not working.

This is not to be confused with dragging/dropping from OS-X to Windows within VMware, that works, but that’s just a program or file moving OS’s… not an image being dragged within a program in Windows, within OS-X. Lose ya there? If you’re a geek, that made sense. heh

I installed bootcamp with Vista 64bit and it’s MUCH better then Vista 64 in VMware or XP Pro in Parallels (Parallels doesn’t support 64 bit because they’re gay apparently). With it bootcamp installed, I was able to install programs… then go back in OS-X, turn on VMware, use spaces so one screen was full screen Vista, the rest is full screen OS-X and then my livewriter *does* work with drag drop… WOOT!

Seriously though, why the fuck is it so slow?

I prefer OS-X to Vista because well, Vista sucks ass. No offense Windows dudes, I loved Windows XP but if you get used to OS-X for a week and then you go to Vista… holy shit. Kill me now. So confusing compared to Xp Pro. What the hell was Windows thinking? It took how many years for this piece of shit? Really? Wow. The only plus Vista has over XP, it recognizes more then 2 gigs of ram, is a true 64 bit OS and it’s more secure. All in all it is better than XP but it’s confusing when you’re used to XP. All this asking for permission shit… fuck me in the goat ass.

Anyway, I wondered, how fast is Vista 64 bit while inside of VMware, running on OS-X 10.5.5? I have a blazing fast system, 10 gigs of ram, 8 core, 2 Xeon 4 Quad processors… seriously, this fucker is insane. 8530 is my geekbench.ca score so I was like.. hmmm…. Vista, within VMware…. I bet I get around 5000 area. I expected it’d be slower, but how slow?

2709! No joke.

geekstats
(geek bench stats of old Mac Mini, new system etc)

So…  I’m 8530 inside OS-X and then  2709 inside VMware running Vista 64 bit? WHFWTFWTFWTFWTF

If it’s like this, I don’t know that I’ll be doing Vista much… jesus, that can’t be good. So I reboot into bootcamp completely and re test the system.

Whew. 7030 geekbench score inside Vista 64bit within bootcamp.

So, 7030 in bootcamp or 2709 in VMware (running Vista 64 inside OS-X). Gee… tough call… haha

Vmware is a *LOT* slower then I thought it’d be.

Now before you think I maybe didn’t give VMware power, check the stats, I have it set att he maximum it allows, 2 processors, 5 gigs of ram (instead of the 8 it allows because I wanted some ram for Mac side as well and Ram doesn’t effect geekbench score believe it or not, it’s all processing power.  My screen is 2590 pixels wide so forgive the scrolling.  (I blacked out my file names for privacy and yes, that’s my girlfriend as my desktop, she’s the hottest woman out there, hands down!

screen

So there ya have it… I am back motherfuckers.

In the future, I’ll show you how spaces makes my life a lot easier. I hate the 2709 bullshit but if all I need is Livewriter within Vista, I can deal with it. Shot, I can be in both OS’x without rebooting, one keyboard click and I am in Vista, one click and I am in OS-X. Best of both worlds. 5 gigs of ram to both OS’s… although I’ll modify that if I am only using Livewriter in Windows. haha

I love stupid people. Seriously. They make life so much more enjoyable. I especially like the Mac versus PC debate. First off, PC stands for Personal Computer… so ummm….. a Mac is a PC too. Mac versus Windows is more appropriate. In any case.. have you ever had this conversation with someone? It’s a lot of fun if the person actually knows what they’re talking about, otherwise… ouch.

Imapc..Imamac
The classic stereotype is that Macs are overpriced, or shitty for gaming. Macs aren’t compatible is another fun one. Here’s the thing though, these stereotypes once *were* true. They’re not anymore though, but really, it doesn’t matter which is better. It matters which is right for you. Depending on your needs, one is a better choice, without question. If you’re a hardcore gamer, you’re much better off to build a custom box and slap Windows XP Pro on the box. DDR2 ram is cheap, you can create a killer system for about the same price as an entry iMac. If you want something with more juice, then it becomes a new conversation. Truth is, gaming isn’t touch on a system, it’s tough on the video card. Get a new card and you’re good to go.

I did some checking, Popular Mechanics tackled the Mac versus PC debate some time ago, they found the Mac to kick PC’s ass badly. Read story here.

I have a higher end Apple, but I’m not biased. I think Windows is great for some things, OS-X is great for other things. If I had to chose one, I’d go OS-X because it allows me more freedom, but that’s me. Might be different for you of course. I just think it’s funny when I hear some dude telling me Mac’s suck and their reasoning is some lame ass ten year old story, or they heard it second or third hand without doing the homework themselves. Truth is, Macs are easier to run, less hassle, not even in the same category as owning/operating a Windows box. I have Windows Vista 64 bit on my OS-X as a back up for when I need to be in Windows. I’d be using XP Pro because Vista is…well… Vista… but the 64 bit version of Xp Pro is buggy compared to 64 bit Vista.

Can my mac play games? Hell yes, with a geekbench.ca score of 8530, I can play the hell out of anything I throw at this sucker… but thing is, i’m not a gamer (on PC) so it doesn’t much matter. Do what’s right for you. Mac’s aren’t the second coming, I love the OS-X system because it’s based on Unix. Mac’s are great, if you like Macs. Windows is great, if you like Windows. One isn’t better then the other, it’s what is right for you.

Next time someone tells you Mac’s suck, ask why and watch as they suck balls making shit up. Try and configure a system with the power mine has for less, I’d like to see this. :) My system, made by Dell… costs more money then Apple charged me. Fact. Apples are over priced in a lot of ways, but no more then Dell or any other company. Cheapest Computer is *always* going to be a custom built box. Common sense says hello.

So I went and ran geekbench again after adding the new ram. Some of you are comp geeks and you’ll understand the sex behind this, others won’t give a fuck. Bottom line, this is more computer then I’ll ever use fully to it’s limits, but that won’t stop me from pushing it.

May

I always wonder what other people’s desk looks like, so I figured.. meh, *maybe* someone is curious what my little geek center looks like. Before I get into things, know that I have always been a Windows user. Even after buying a Mac Mini and adding 4 gigs of ram to it, I was still using bootcamp with Windows XP Pro 95% of the time.

There are advantages to both operating systems, I just got tired of having to deal with drivers and the hassle of XP not seeing more then 2 gigs of ram etc (that’s right kids, if you run Windows XP Pro and it’s not the 64 bit version, your system can’t use more then 2 gigs of ram.  MS claims it can, but many benchmark tests prove otherwise). If you want to run something, you have to click start, go to programs, funnel through a bunch of shit to find it and what if you have more then one version of a piece of software? Then it’s a pain as well.. things conflicting, drivers not working right, the list goes on and on.

With Apple, to be blunt and sound like a commercial… things just work. Don’t get me wrong, Apple has it’s shit moments too, every OS does… but OS-X is based on Unix. It’s rock solid, it’s 99% virus free, it’s fast as fuck as well. I found it weird that if someone loads up XP or Vista and then runs it in bootcamp via Mac OS-X…. the benchmarks scores are faster then if you ran the same benchmark from a PC with the same specs. If you google, you’ll see I’m right. It sucks, I know.. but it’s true. Mac Pros, Macbook Pros etc, run Vista faster then PC’s do. Weird hey?

So I figured fuck it, I see all these people flipping to mac because they got tired of their PC being a piece of shit, filled with bloatware, spyware, viruses, the list goes on. I run a tighter box then that so mine wasn’t that bad.. but still… I wanted something faster, something cool.

I moved from a Pentium 4 2.8 with a gig of ram to a manly Mac Mini 2.0 with 4 gigs of ram. Some people might think.. old system was a 2.8, new system is a 2.0. Old system will be faster. Nope, not even remotely close.

So, I went from Pentium 4 2.8 with 1 gig of ram to Mac Min 2.0 with 4 gigs of ram, then a year later..  Mac Pro 2.8 (x2) with 10 gigs of ram. If you’re curious how fast your system is, head over to geekbench.ca and download the free software.

Here’s a snap of my profile showing all my geekbench scores. Click for larger.

Here’s a picture of things as it sits right this second..

System on left:

Apple Mac Min 2.0 with 4 gigs ram.
120 gig internal hard drive
8X superdrive (dvd/cd R/RW)
Samsung 24” 244T LCD Monitor
Seagate 750 gig external drive
Seagate 500 gig external drive
Maxtor 300 gig external drive.
Apple keyboard, Logitech roller ball mouse.
OS: Windows XP Pro (32 bit) via bootcamp

System on right (main system)

Apple Mac Pro 2.8 Xeon (x2) with 10 gigs of ram
320 gig internal hard drive
16X super drive (dvd/cd R/RW)
Apple 30” Cinema Display
Seagate 7200.11 1 terabyte drive (x2)
Apple keyboard, logitech mouse
Logitech 9000 webcam
OS: Mac OS-X 10.5 (64 bit)

All is sitting on a desk from Ikea… but I am getting a new desk shortly. Ikea is great but their stuff is cheaper. The desk gives me splinters on the edges where my wrists/arms are. I want a biomorph desk, those are fucking insane… but also, fucking pricey.

I think after the desk, next investment in my office is an Arthur Miller Aeron chair.

I am going to streamline soon, moving the Mini to the living room to run the Plasma, my buddy is taking the Samsung off my hands. The 244T was/is easily the best screen I had ever used but the new mac cinema display… wow. Unreal.

So there ya have it. Eltardo’s computer systems.
